So you want to start Bowhunting. You want to join that special legion of hunters that put woodsmanship and stealth above spotting and shooting. Good for you. You are now taking the steps that can lead you to some of the most interesting and memorable adventures of your life, and if you’re lucky you may even harvest some great animals along the way. There has been a big push as of late for long range shooting. You see a lot of television shows lately that have hunters making 400, 500, 600 yard shots or longer. While the skill involved in shooting those distances is amazing, and far better than I could ever do, where is the hunting skill. My eight year old daughter can get within 500 yards of an elk. I am not trying to tell anyone else how, where, or what to hunt, but you have to get a lot closer, and use a lot more of your woodsman skills than that when bowhunting.
One of the first decisions that you have to make when getting into bowhunting is are you going to be a traditional archer, or are you going to use a compound bow. For the purposes of this discussion I am going to focus on compound bows for bowhunting. In choosing a compound bow you are going to want a bow that will not only be forgiving, meaning that minor faults in shooting form will not be instantly transferred to the target. That is not to say that you shouldn’t practice to improve your shooting form, because you should always practice to get better. Also you should look for a bow that you won’t out grow in a year. A bow that I would highly recommend puchasing is the Diamond Marquis, this bow can be purchased as a kit and in my opinion will offer the shooter a forgiving bow that will last for years and can be used on game from Alabama to Africa. Good optics are also essential for bow hunting, especially if you hunt or are ever planning to hunt in the west. The areas that you hunt west of the Mississippi are big territory ans demand the best optics that you can afford. This includes both your binoculars and a spotting scope. A great set up to buy would be Bushnell Infinity Binoculars, and the Redhead Epic Spotting Scope Kit. Another essential optic is a range finder, for the bowhunting these in my opinion are essential, they can’t make the shot but will aid in determining the exact distance and helping the bowhunter in placing a good shot on the game animal. A great range finder to purchase is the Nikon Archer’s Choice. This range finder will give a true distance and will compensate for various shooting angles and will give the equivalent of a horizontal shooting distance. I hope that these few tips will get you going in the wide, wide world of bowhunting.
