How many times have you dreamed of Elk Hunting in Colorado? Have you ever dreamed of hearing the scream of a hot bull, or the soft mew of a herd of cows? Well what are you waiting for; Now’s the time to start planning that Colorado elk hunting trip that you have fanticized about since you were a kid.

First there are a few things that you should consider before you make your trip to the Centennial State.
Elk hunting in general and, Elk Hunting in Colorado is for the most part a physically demanding endeavor. Most of the good Colorado elk hunting areas are located 9,000 feet above sea level and almost none of it is flat.

Remember that a successful Elk Hunt is not measured by horn alone. Time spent in the field with family and friends can be some of the best time of your life.  Also remember that any Elk with a bow is a trophy

One quick and inexpensive way to address this issue is to get in better physical condition that you are now in. The quickest way to do this is to start a preseason walking program. Walking is a very inexpensive way to get in better physical condition, all you need is a good pair of walking shoes and a pair of shorts. There are several good shoe manufactures that make shoes specifically designed for this;Hi-Tec Multiterra Sport, Merrell Moab Hiker, and Adventure X4 Walking Shoe are all perfectly suited to this type of preseason training.

Good optics are also a necessity when you get to the elk woods. A good pair of binoculars 8x40 or 10x40 and/or variable power spotting scope with a 50mm objective lens will save you a lot of time and many miles of walking by scouting areas for game from a fixed location. Some of my favorite models are the XT, Leupold Wind River Series, and the Swarovski EL Binoculars. The Trekker Spotting Scope and Leupold Sequoia Spotting Scope are great products that you can’t go wrong with.
Great rain gear and warm weather clothing are a must on any Colorado elk hunt. Being comfortable in the coldest and rainiest weather will greatly increase your odds of harvesting a Colorado elk no matter where you are hunting. The  Rain Suede and Foultech are excellent choices in foul weather gear. Any of the Insulated Hunting Clothing would be a great choice for a late season Colorado elk hunt.
Warm boots with plenty of ankle support are also a necessity on a Colorado elk hunt.
Any of the Outfitters Series or the Red Head Bone Dry Boot  will get the job done.
As with any adventure Elk Hunting in Colorado has the potential to be a trip of a life time, and with a little preplanning and preparation it can be.
