Fly fishing for Bass is one of the fastest and most exciting segments of the fly fishing arena. That’s not to say that fly fishing for Bass is new, because it isn’t, but the number of people that are switching to the fly rod when pursuing Bass has grown considerably in the past few years.

If you already fish for Northern Pike with a fly rod, the set up that you have will work great. If you are new to fly fishing for bass, you will probably need to get some new gear.

Like I said if you already have a 7, 8, or 9, wt fly rod and reel set up you’re good to go, other wise you will want to get at a minimum a 7wt fly rod. Remember that you are going to be throwing large very wind resistant flies. I really like the Temple Fork Outfitters TiCRx series. This is a great fast action fly rod that really drives big flies in all types of conditions. If you are interested in participating in fly fishing for Bass in a tournament, the Sage Bass Series Fly Rod is specifically designed to conform to the 8'maximum length requirement, and is legal to fish in existing tournaments because it is under 8' long. Either of these rods will be great choices for fly fishing for Bass.

The fly reel that you choose should be big enough to hold that larger line that is required for fly fishing for bass, and should be balanced with the fly rod that you choose. A Redington CD Fly Reel would be a great choice in a reel system. Your fly line should be match with your line weight, and speciality fly lines specifically designed for fly fishing for bass are now made. The Orvis Fresh Water Bass Wonderline is a great choice for this task.

Fly fishing for Bass will also require some speciality flies to catch your quarry. There are many types of flies that can be used for Bass, from twister tail grub flies, to tube flies, to poppers, and frogs, many have been modified from standard Bass patterns to fit the standards required to fly fish for Bass. I have developed a line of "Pike Slayer" flies that are hand tied and are specifically designed for fly fishing for Bass. The flies can be seen on this web site and I can be contacted at the address listed at the bottom of the page.

I hope the information presented will help in getting started in fly fishing for Bass, and lead to some very exciting times and experiences.
