You may be a seasoned fisherman, or a complete novice, but choosing fly fishing gear can be some what intimidating if you are walking to into a fly shop for the first time.

A 7, 8, or 9 wt set up with a floating fly line is great for large Northern Pike
The most important component in your fly fishing gear is the fly rod. There are many choices in fly rods in both price and quality. Two of the manufactures and models that that I like and will give you a great rod areSage xi2 and Temple Fork Outfitters Lefty Kreh Professional Series. Both of these manufacturers make excellent quality rods with great support for there products. When choosing your rod make sure you match the rod action to your casting stroke. The action is how and where the rod is designed to flex. Rod actions will be listed as fast, medium fast, medium, medium slow, and slow. The faster the action, the flex point is higher up on the tip, and the slower the action the flex point is closer to the handle. Fast rods are for those with a short quick casting stroke or driving large flies in the wind and slow rods require a longer slower casting motion and are for more delicate dry fly presentations. One action is not better than another we are all different and that’s why rods are made in different actions.

Another component of your fly fishing gear is choosing the correct weight of fly rod for the situation you will be fishing. Fly rods come in weights from 1 through 14, with a 1 wt being the lightest and made for delicate presentations of small flies on small streams to the 14 wt made for fishing blue water bill fish. A good all around set up is a 6 wt. This will cover most fresh water fishing situations and will be a good start for you quiver of rods.

A 4,5,or 6 wt is a good all around set up that will allow you to fish for most fresh water species from sunfish to trout
No fly fishing gear is complete without a good fly reel. Fly reels differ in that they are not made to fight the fish like a bait casting rod, but they do need to include a good drag system because you will use them when fighting large fish. A great fly reel is the White River 270 Fly Reel, match with your fly rod will make a set that can last a life time.

When starting off your fly fishing gear should include a weight forward floating fly line. I would use the Lefty Kreh Signature Series, this line coupled with a balance fly rod and reel should get you through most fly fishing situations especially when getting started. Makes a great smooth casting fly line that will last for years.

I hope that these few simple suggestions will help you in choosing the fly fishing gear that is right for you and will start you down that exciting road of fly fishing
