SETTING UP GOOSE DECOYS

Mixing different types of Decoys can help add variety to your spread

This is also the time to assess the need for additional goose decoys and the type that will work best for your style of hunting. For example if you have access to large fields that can be driven into with a truck and trailer, life size decoys such as (click here to buy) Final Approach Last Pass Field Decoys or Bigfoot Decoys may be a good choice for you and your hunting buddies, but if you have to walk a considerable distance through rough or wet terrain, a silhouette decoy such as the Outlaw Decoys may be a better choice because you will be able to transport a greater number of decoys to your hunting location. Shell decoys such as (click here to buy) Carry-Lites  or G& H are the old stand bys and bridge the gap between being portable and being able to transport large numbers in a limited amount of space, because of the stackable nature of
Once you have your hunting site secured, you may want to spend some time prior to actually getting into the field preparing your goose layout. This may include separating different types of decoys for different locations, drawing out a map for new partners so they understand how and where to set up the decoys, and explaining to everyone in advance what there job for the days is and what expectations you might have of them.
One thing that I feel is very important in setting up a goose decoy spread is give them something different. If you are not the hunters decoying geese in Northern Canada, chances are the geese you are hunting have been shot at before, and it doesn’t take geese very long to figure out that if there six dozen goose decoy shells in every field in the area that these are places to avoid. Take some time to look around the area that you hunt and see what everybody else is doing, and maybe try something a little different. This may mean using fewer and/or more decoys, using a different style of decoy body (full body instead of shells), using a different style of decoy layout (a random set instead of the fish hook), this just might be the difference in getting geese to come into your spread instead of the group of hunters in the next field.
