SALT WATER FLIES Target Big salt Water Fish
All salt water flies shown are hand tied with the highest quality materials and were developed through many years of research, trial and error.
Gurggler $4.00 Mustad 92553 6/0 Hook White Green While I don't profess that these are the only salt water flies that you should use or these are the only salt water flies that will catch fish. I do offer you this. I have spent coutless hours of research and have come up with patterns that are very successful and easy to fish. Every fish shown in the phots of this web site were caught on salt water flies tied by me. Large Fly Rods (8 - 14 wt.) are needed for fishing in Salt Water. Temple Fork Outfitters makes several great models. When tying these larger salt water flies I like to use synthetic materaials because of their ability to shed water. Believe me after 8 - 10 hours of throwing a big salt water fly for BIG FISH you are going to be thankful for every ounce of weight that has been cut out of the salt water fly. Larger Fly Reels are also needed when using Salt Water Flies.
The old style salt water flies that used a lot of rabbit fur were, and still are great salt water flies, but because of the leather rabbit hide, after a few casts the salt water fly has the weight and feel of a dish rag when it is out of the water. When casting these big heavy salt water flies we have affectionately started calling the process, chuck and duck for obvious reasons. Out of this process I started experimenting with different materials that performed as well as some of the leather materials, but would provide the user an expeience more akin to fly fishing and less like bait casting with a fly rod.
After many proto-types I have developed a fly (the wobbler) that acts much like to Flat Fish or Lazy Ike style plugs that have been used successfully for years. this fly when cast on a floating line will sit on the surface and dive when stripped back. If the fly is used with a sinking line and short leader it will go under water and dive deeper when stripped and float toward the surface when stopped. This is a very effective technique for covering different areas of the water column.
I have also been tying a twister tail grub fly that absolutely drive the BIG FISH crazy. Although this is the heaviest of all of the flies that I tie, it is still much lighter than some of the old flies that I used to fish with, and it has become my goto fly for most situations. This fly can be stripped as soon as it hits the water and be fished very near the surface. or it can be weighted or fished with a sink tip to get it down in the water column for those hard to get fish in less than perfect conditions
